Review:
Sophisticated instrumental arrangements, layered harmonies and tender lyrics add up to a lovely album of quiet-time songs created by the late guitarist Joe Beck (who played with Miles Davis and other jazz greats) and his collaborator, vocalist, musician and composer Darryl Tookes. Beck and Tookes’ original songs and arrangements of traditional lullabies (“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”; “Rock A Bye Baby,” “Brahm’s Lullaby”) come with a rhythmic beat, silky smooth harmonics and resonant parental love. Highlights: The joyful celebration of fatherhood in the title track; the warm reassurance of “Daddy’s Always Here,” and a deeply moving expression of the overwhelming desire parents feel protect their children from all dangers and hurts in “I Love You Too Much.”
